Recession Hits SMEs Green Agenda
 | | | |
A recent survey by the Government’s environmental guidance website NetRegs, has shown that a significant number of SMEs have at least some measures in place to reduce their environmental impact, however since hitting tougher economic times, fewer than one in five now say they are willing to spend on green investments within the next year.
More than half of participants thought that investment in an environmental policy is “of no use” to them, despite mounting evidence that those with green credentials are more likely to win new business.
Debbie Chatting, Strategy Manager at NetRegs.gov.uk, stated: “It’s good to see an improvement in SMEs’ green business activity, but efforts are clearly starting to fall back in many areas.”
This reluctance to invest in environmental products and services can be very costly in itself, as The Environment Agency’s most recent Spotlight report revealed that half of all serious industrial pollution occurrences are caused by SMEs, with the average environmental fine now exceeding £10,000
